Healthy Breasts!!
HEALTHY BREASTS from Yoga Alliance Loving October - what a special time of year! October is also Healthy Breast Care Month--at least that is what I've named it! Why put all our energy into what we don't want (cancer), when we can put our energy into what we DO want (healthy bodies, healthy lymphatic systems). So my gift to you this month how we can keep ourselves - and especially our breasts healthy. Put it up where you will see it every day! "Healthy breast care begins & ends with a healthy lymphatic system. The lymph does its job best when it is stimulated through breath & movement. Remember! Your attitude counts for a lot… Finding the good in life as often as you can gives energy to every cell!" ~Shakta 1. Breathing: deep breathing and breath of fire. 2. Yoga & exercise! 3. Massage breasts and armpit area. 4. Dry brush massage: from feet upward, also for circulation. 5. Hydrotherapy: Cold showers with massage or alternate hot (3 min) and cold (1 min) showers. 6. Rebounder: jump, jog, dance, & move arms! 7. Healthy Diet: organic & plant-based, including cruciferous veggies (broccoli, cauliflower).* 8. Avoid toxic products: pesticides, aluminum in deodorants, environmental toxins. 9. Unrestrictive bras: avoid underwires, have some braless time each day! 10. Do No Harm
Pick up your Do No Harm Bracelet at Yin Yang Yoga! We seem to be living in a world that is getting less hospitable every day. Look closely at any endeavor our species has engaged in and it appears we are unaware of the harm we do, we ignore the harm we do, we intentionally do harm for our own gain, or sadly in some cases we do harm for our own pleasure and enjoyment. Has no one taught us to do no harm? If we haven't been taught to do no harm, we see no harm in doing harm. We cause harm and shrug it off. We cause harm and laugh about it. We cause harm and brag about it. Sadder still, our children bear witness to our actions and never learn to do no harm themselves. Above all else we must teach our children, by example and instruction, this basic moral principle of life. We must begin to make better choices and treat each other, the other creatures who share this planet with us, and this planet we call home with greater respect and compassion. We believe that the first and most basic moral law is, "Do no harm." Because we can feel pain and suffering, we can imagine the pain and suffering of others, and we can act accordingly to minimize the harm we cause. What does "do no harm" mean? Ultimately it means to give thoughtful consideration to our actions. “Do no harm” simply means to consider how our actions may affect the world we all share, to be compassionate in our dealings with all creatures, and not to thoughtlessly despoil our planet. Doctors are asked to “first do no harm,” why not lawyers, businessmen, religious leaders and politicians? Why not us? Why not now? It sounds like a simple idea because it is a simple idea, but it may be effective over the long run. Will “do no harm” solve all the problems in our world? Perhaps not, but this is an effort to decrease the suffering in the world and to increase the kindness. We hope that “do no harm” becomes that little voice that guides our actions. And we hope you will join us and spread the message "Do no harm." Show everyone you care and use “Do no harm” to sign-off in your correspondence in place of "Best Wishes", "Yours" or "Regards." If you have a web site, be proud of your support and add the words “Do No Harm” to the top of your home page where everyone will see it. Be bold and creative in thinking of ways to expose as many as possible to the “Do No Harm” message, but please, do no harm in doing so. It is not necessary to mention the source of the message. This is certainly a case where the message is far more important than the messengers. All we ask is that you practice do no harm and take every opportunity to share the words "do no harm" with others. If you wish to include this essay or link to the “Do No Harm” web page, please do; or if you wish to change the wording or write your own, that's equally OK with us. If we are to change our world for the better, we simply must share the “Do No Harm” message with family and friends, with neighbors and our community.

Cynthia is a certified Eclectic Hatha Yoga Teacher and a 200 hour/500 hour graduate of the Yoga Teacher Training Institute in New York, under the tutelage of Swami Ma Mokshapriya Shakti Saraswati, Ph.D. and Marianne Mitsinikos, E-RYT500. Cynthia has a performance dance background, has trained as an advanced belt in Traditional Tae Kwon Do under the tutelage of Sabumnim Michael Donohue and Grandmaster Hyun Ok Shin in New York and holds certifications in Reiki and Integrated Energy Therapy®. She was blessed to have practiced and traveled all around India - from Rishikesh to Kannyakumari, and from Mumbai to Chennai - in 2010. It was truly a profound, life changing experience to "live" yoga every day in the land of its birth. Cynthia has been committed to a personal daily practice of Yoga, Japa Mala & Meditation for the past 9 years. She has been an active member of the Long Island Yoga Association, YTTI Alumni and of Yoga Alliance, and is looking forward to becoming an active member of the Maryland Yoga Community and of the Ying Yang Yoga Center in particular. Meditation Sessions
Meditation Sessions at Yin Yang Yoga Center Tuesday's From 5-6 with Michael Perfetto Meditation is a word signifying THE state of BEING. The state of BEING is the most natural state, having life. It is simply the awareness of the constancy of life-unified in the present moment; The instant all living beings share, and live together. In this, the source, lies freedom... The practice of meditation is one of willingness. The willingness to perceive innocently; to release the meaning placed on all things, situations, and circumstances; to allow that which all things are a part of be, without judgement. Through meditation we learn how to dance with what shows up in life, residing in the now, not an instant in the past or an instant in the future. We learn to bring illusion to truth..... darkness to light, recognizing that there is not one moment better than another to be peaceful, present, clear, and truly loving.

Yoga Offers New Kind of Exercise by Olivia Snyder
Yoga Offers New Kind of Exercise by Olivia Snyder ’12 Yoga is an untapped and often overlooked source of exercise; one that is especially unknown to students. When Olney teenagers think exercise, their minds immediately go to Fitness First. However, Olney has another local source of exercise, which is yoga at the Yin Yang Yoga Center. Yoga is a system of exercises aimed at controlling and calming the body and mind. Many kinds of yoga exist – some focus on stretching while others concentrate on providing a sweat-worthy workout (like power yoga). All yoga variations, however, focus on centering the body, spirit and mind to provide both a physical and mental tune-up. Alicia Cuervo, founder of Olney’s yoga establishment and avid yogi herself, started Yin Yang Yoga Center just a few years ago in September of 2009. “I decided to open the center to share the gift of yoga to others; it was and still is such a blessing in my life. It gives me strength and leaves me feeling fantastic. Plus, I love the challenge of it.” Yoga’s benefits on both the mind and body are manifold. Practicing yoga improves flexibility and muscle joint mobility, strengthens, tones and builds muscles, corrects posture, strengthens the spine, increases stamina, creates balance and grace, improves digestion, increases circulation, and encourages weight loss. The intangible benefits that yoga encourages are just as numerous. Yoga increases body awareness, relieves stress in the body, refreshes the body by relieving muscle strain, relaxes the mind and body, centers attention, sharpens concentration and frees the spirit. Despite yoga’s long list of positive effects, and the availability of a yoga center, most teenagers in Olney do not take advantage of the opportunity to practice it. “I think that yoga has gotten a reputation for being an ‘old persons’ exercise, or simply a form of stretching,” conceded Cuervo. “Anyone who has been in one of our classes knows that yoga is actually an amazing workout. You leave feeling strong, lean and stretched.” Yoga is especially helpful to student athletes. Athletes from Every sport from wrestling to diving to football benefit from yoga because stretching and muscle building go hand in hand. In order to maintain and improve muscle strength, muscles must also be lengthened. “Yoga is more than exercise; it helps athletes to understand their bodies in a new way,” explained Cuervo. “Knowing what is tight or weak can make the difference between a healthy or injured athlete. Yoga gives the athlete an edge.” The Yin Yang Yoga Center offers anything and everything to satisfy both the seasoned yogi and the curious beginner. The center will soon offer teen classes as well as more high energy “hip-hop” classes. Yin Yang Yoga Center offers Olney an alternative source for exercise, one that is essential to both the serious athlete and the devoted health nut, as well as the average student looking for a more exciting way to get in shape. The effects of yoga are simply too beneficial for teens to pass up.
